Next Generation Neutron and Gamma-Ray Instrumentation for Small Satellites and Planetary Rovers

  • PI of NASA Planetary Instrument Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO) Proposal: Title: Next Generation Neutron and Gamma-Ray Spectrometer for Planetary Spacecraft - Using new detector materials to develop new instrumentation for small spacecraft (CubeSats) to scout for water and other elements in the solar system.
  • Collaborator on MSL Curiosity Rover: Analysis of the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) data from Curiosity for estimation of high neutron absorption cross section element abundances (Cl, Fe) in order to reconstruct the near-surface distribution of volatile elements on Mars.

  • Planetary Surface Processes using Imaging & Spectroscopy
  • Co-Investigator on Mars 2020 Rover Mastcam-Z: Downlink Operations Lead and Science Operations Center data analyst.
  • Visible, thermal and raman spectroscopy for characterization of water-related processes, grain-sorting, and mineral cements on Earth and Mars.
  • Using Mastcam multispectral data from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover Curiosity's to characterize ancient habitable environments on Mars.

    Rover Autonomy using Machine Learning
  • Infrared and visible data can be combined with machine learning algorithms to develop autonomous rover capabilities. Specifically, computational algorithms can be combined with rover engineering to result in highly capable rovers that can both travel long distances and autonomously acquire data on targets of high priority along the way.
